Pet Food Recall

I am sure everyone has determined whether or not their pet food was part of the recall. We were lucky that none of the food we use was part of the recall. We have been getting calls from lots of concerned pet guardians who need more information. We've happily been checking the Menu Foods site to help people, such as a few elderly people who did not have computers or internet access. We have also been keeping an eye on the media to make sure we are up-to-date on information.

We are very thankful that none of our animals were affected, yet we can't help but feel for those who lost their pets during this tragic event. We commit to remaining aware of this issue and to taking whatever measures are necessary in keeping our animals safe. -Beau

Canine Cocktail Pawty A Hit!

As we prepare to open our new adoption center and boutique, I am amazed at the support we have received from the pet lovers in NYC. Although the facility isn't open yet -- we have been offering puppy and adult training classes, agility classes and lots of fun events for dogs.

I have become great friends with the Andrea Arden agility crew, our lil dog social visitors and all of the breed meetups that rent our space for their monthly get-togethers...Animal Haven Soho is already the place to be for animal lovers.
One of these visitors, Jenna Gates, runs the Shiba Inu meet-up group. She is a huge supporter of what AH Soho is all about and wanted to help! She thought -- meetups are fun ... but let's turn it up a notch and through a cocktail party...within weeks, she had a caterer, bartender, raffles prizes and bakery for the four-legged friends.

Jenna, along with the help of Lillian, the Shiba Inu assistant organizer, and all of the other volunteers threw a terrific party. While the people got to mingle with wonderful cocktails and treats from Gotham Caterers, the pooches ran around our big events space. Occasionally, they took a break and visited the Buttercup Pawti-tisserie table!
It was such a success, I think they are planning a second one in a few months...will keep you posted. Please visit the Shiba Inu Meetup Site: http://shibainu.meetup.com/101/

Thanks to all those who helped! -Jennifer

Garfield, Rest In Peace

During my initial job interview with Animal Haven I was taken on a tour of the shelter. During that tour I met a robust, senior orange tabby in the FELV+ room. He caught my eye because his ears flattened out to the sides. I thought to myself, "This is handsome guy!" To put it mildly, I was truly touched as I visited the sanctuary floor at the Flushing shelter, which houses the FELV+ cats, the FIV+ cats, and a room of feral kitties.

Now, nearly four years later, I say goodbye to Garfield. I know its a really silly thing to say, but I thought of Garfield as the Hugh Hefner of the leukemia room. He had 2-3 female cats cuddled around him, always by his side. In particular, Foxy the Siamese mix was stuck to him like glue.

Like Foxy, we are all learning to live without Garfield. I try to continue to remember that he had a good, long life. He survived a complicated surgery several years ago, recovered well, and lived a full life here at Animal Haven for the past 12 years. We all miss you dearly Garfield... -Beau
